Jan. 27th- Jan. 31st

This week is Catholic School's week, we will have lots of activities going on, and we may not get to everything. Thank you so much for your support and I look forward to seeing you at tall of the events we have going on. 

Literacy- 

This week we will be answering the big question "How can we work together to meet people's needs?" Our main selection will be called "Scarcity."  We will try to understand that meeting the needs of people requires many decisions and requires the work of many people. We will be learning 8 more amazing words! They are consumers, producers, strand, lack, decision, fiber, extraordinary, and typical. Our high-frequency words this week include: above, ago, enough, toward, whole and word. Children will also be able to distinguish between singular and plural nouns. 


Religion-

    We are going to begin learning about Jesus as our teacher. We will be reviewing the parable of the Good Samaritan as well as understanding more deeply the call to love our neighbors.


Math-
  We began our unit on place value on Friday. We are going to continue working with two-digit subtraction. Some of the students are struggling with two-digit subtraction, so please continue working with them on two-digit subtraction with regrouping. We will continue working on this in class, but extra support at home will reinforce the concepts. 


Social Studies/Science-

Our unit on the water cycle will be coming to a close on Tuesday. We will begin our unit on Insects. There will be a project involved with this unit. Please be looking for a rubric to come home as your child will need your help. 



Spelling-

R-controlled vowels, ir, er, and ur are our next spelling topic, the words this week are: 
person, nurse, dirt, turn, birth, serve, curb, curl, skirt, purse, turtle and her. 


Reminders-


This week is Catholic Schools' Week. We have a lot of fun activities planned, please look at the Colt Express for a schedule as there are events that parent's are invited to attend. 

There is no Wednesday mass this week, however we have All School's mass on Friday. Friday is also a noon dismissal day.

Jan. 20th-24th

Literacy- 

This week and next we will be answering the big question "How can we work together to meet people's needs?" Religion-

    This week we will be looking at two parables, the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the buried treasure. After reviewing the unit we will be talking about Jesus as our teacher by looking at the parable of the Good Samaritan. 


Math-
  We have one more lesson in topic 9 which covers two-digit subtraction. We will be taking an assessment on topic 9 and then opening topic 10. Topic 10 will be looking at place value up to 1,000. 


IMPORTANT:  Please remember to send your child in with their homework sheet. There have been a number of students that haven't brought in their homework. They can either print it off or write it on a sheet of notebook paper. 

Social Studies/Science-


This we will continue with our unit on the water cycle. We will be looking at clouds and how they are formed. We will be also asking the question "What is precipitation?" 
 Your kids learned a new song this past week. It goes to the tune "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain"

Jan. 13th- Jan. 17th

We are off an running with the semester. I know that I am excited to have the kids back. It has been such a joy to see how they have grown in just two short weeks! 
Literacy- 

We are going to continue our study of Abraham Lincoln. We will understand that working together has changed history, involves many people and has made many positive changes. We will be learning 8 more amazing words! They are identify, participate, significant, scour, ingenious, aloft, architect and tinker. Our high-frequency words this week include: certainly, laugh, you're, either, second, great and worst. Children will also be able to identify proper nouns as well as count and segment phonemes. 


Religion-

    We finished our unit on the Holy Family and we are now moving into studying about good news that Jesus brings us all. We will be looking at two parables, the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the buried treasure. 


Math-
  This week we are again working through subtracting two-two digit numbers. Even though it is a difficult concept, your kiddos seem to be grasping the concept of regrouping (borrowing) 1 ten into 10 ones. Challenge them this week with some two or three digit subtracting with and without regrouping. 


IMPORTANT:  Please remember to send your child in with their homework sheet. There have been a number of students that haven't brought in their homework. They can either print it off or write it on a sheet of notebook paper. 

Social Studies/Science-

In second grade, we really dive into the water cycle. We will be learning words like evaporation, condensation, precipitation. We will be learning a few songs, so the lyrics will be posted next week. We will be keeping a cloud journal over our study. 

Spelling-
Contractions are our next spelling topic, the words this week are: 
can't, I'm, she's, haven't, it's, didn't, aren't, hadn't, he's, who's, isn't, I'll. 


Reminders-

Jan. 6th- 10th

Merry Christmas and Happy Epiphany! 
I hope that you all had a much deserved break and a blessed Christmas! First of all, I would like to thank all of you for the wonderful Christmas presents and SCRIP. 
I cannot wait to see your children as we get ready to enter into the second semester of our school year! 

Literacy- 

Getting back into the swing of things, we are going to be reading about Abraham Lincoln this week. We will understand that working together has changed history, involves many people and has made many positive changes. We will be learning 8 more amazing words! They are identify, participate, significant, scour, ingenious, aloft, architect and tinker. Our high-frequency words this week include: certainly, laugh, you're, either, second, great and worst. Children will also be able to identify proper nouns as well as count and segment phonemes. 


Religion-

     Following our Christmas season, we are going to be discussing the Holy Family. We will look at Joseph, Mary and Jesus all independently. We will conclude looking at the Holy Family by discussing how we can become more like the Holy Family. 


*As a reminder, if you haven't filled out the paperwork for First Reconciliation and Communion, please make sure that fill that out and attend the workshops.*

Math-
  We flew through our topic on two-digit addition with regrouping. We will now be moving into subtracting two-digit numbers. We will be subtracting one-digit numbers from two-digit numbers with and without regrouping. 


IMPORTANT: In order to begin the transition to third grade, your child will need to bring in the math homework sheet that shows after the quiz. This is the reteaching, practice or enrichment sheet. They can either print it off or write it on a sheet of notebook paper. The homework will be due the following day.
