Literacy-
The question of the week is "What can we learn by exploring the desert?" Students will understand that the desert gets very little rain, is home to many animals and has plants that need little water.
We will build our oral vocabulary with the words: arid, haven, dunes, ledge, precipitation, forbidding, landform and extinct.
We will also be able to recognize and use our high frequency words-animals, early, eyes, full, warm and water.
Our selection vocabulary this week is- cactus, climate, coyote, desert and harsh.
Our focus this week in phonics will include inflected endings, review of consonant blends, and VCe words.
Your children this week will also be to identify declarative (statement) and interrogative (question) sentences. We will be writing brief reports this week and next.
We will also be covering the letters H and h in handwriting this week.
Religion-
This week we will learn about the Ten Commandments by learning how we were given them. We will also reflect on how we can live them out in our own lives. We will then continue by learning ways in which we love God, including worship through mass and prayer.
On Wednesday, we are going to be praying a decade of the rosary for your child's intentions as well as attend mass.
Math-
The goal for topic 5 is to understand place value. We will be modelling tens and one, reading and writing numbers, identifying greater than and less than, count to 100 and find 10 more or 10 less.
There are many different websites that have games for children to practice place value, I really enjoy this one, and it would be great practice for your child!
Science-
We are still working through various life cycles. This week we will cover the life cycles of a butterfly, chicken and frog. Your child will also research the life cycle of an animal and present it to the class next week!
Spelling-
The words are available on Spelling City. Our words this week will deal with inflectional endings- dropped, dropping, excited, exciting, lifted, lifting, hugged, hugging, smiled, smiling, talked, talking
